what’s on the needles

June 29, 2008

i’m working on a few things at the moment, albeit very slowly because of my study schedule.

first, the very adorable hoodie baby blanket by the thrifty knitter (pattern was originally in magknits). i’m still on the neverending stockinette section, but i actually enjoy stockinette. lots of it. particularly while spending so many hours a day doing brain-intensive work. it’s nice to turn to something relatively mindless and relaxing.

knitted with lion brand cotton-ease (in the “lake” colorway, i’ll be using the beautiful blue-black-y “charcoal” for the border), which is quite possibly my favorite yarn of the moment. i love the colors, love the stretch, love the softness. actually, i was surprised at first at how soft this blankie is turning out to be, because my other major use of cotton-ease has been for a sheldon. i had to knit sheldon on size 5 needles to try to prevent holes (note the word “try”). i’m using size 8’s for this blanket and the fabric is soooo soft and snuggly. it’s going to be a great baby blanket.

i’m also working on a pair of plain jane stockinette socks (see? i do love the simple patterns right now), based on the yarn harlot‘s basic sock recipe.

knitted with regia sock yarn i picked up at a new yarn, in north seattle. i can’t find the ballband at the moment to share the colorway, but i like it. it doesn’t pool very much, and the changes are frequent enough to keep it interesting.

i do, however, need to switch over from metal dpns to wood. i go through phases of preferring one to the other, and i must have been in a metal phase when i cast these puppies on (6 weeks ago! i’m so slow!) and am now definitely wanting wood back. hopefully it won’t change my gauge too much.

i am anxiously awaiting july 24th – the day on which i finish the big test i’m studying for, and the day on which i am done with homework for a VERY LONG TIME. no homework = much more knitting time. i can’t wait!

saturday things

June 28, 2008

i spent my first few hours of the day frantically cleaning the house, knowing that our landlord would be coming over to fix a few things. i’m not sure why i feel a need to impress the landlord, but i do. i guess i want him to know that we do cherish this home that he owns. cleaning also reminded me of saturday mornings at my best friend’s house growing up – they always cleaned on saturday mornings. every saturday. we were not that cleanly at our house. after doing it this morning, though, i can absolutely see why that friend’s mom instituted the practice. it feels so good to lounge around a clean house all day long!

i took the dogs with me to run errands this morning, which was kind of fun. we went to the bank and to walgreens, and used the drive-thrus of both places. i was going to leave them in the car and go into walgreens, but i was worried about them overheating. it’s a hot day today. and somehow doing these mundane things with dogs in the back of the sub’ makes doing them more fun!

studying: studying for the big upcoming exam is going slowly. i wish i could focus a bit better. today i’ve been working on indian law, community property, and torts. hopefully i’ll get through family law by the end of the day.

okay, nothing exciting going on today, i guess. i’ll work on knitting content for next time.

Ha. Ha.

wow. the joke is SO on me. on my way to pick up my dandy new craigslist chair, i had to stop and get cash. they wanted $30. the atm only spits out $20s, so I got $40. the route to their house was mostly highways, but i figured there’d be a convenience store or something nearby so i could break one of the 20s. i suddenly found myself very close to their house with too much cash. i briefly considered just giving them $40, and then decided that was silly, so i turned around to find a place to break my bills.

i found a grocery store, thinking i could also pick up something for dinner. walked over to the deli, where everything looked fried and unappealing. i then picked up a $2 fruit cup from the fruit section (so proud of myself: buying something healthy!). i checked out in the little self-check out line, started walking out of the store with my $18 in change, and… hey? where’s my other $20?

somewhere in there i dropped it. i searched and searched to no avail. i left my name and phone number with customer service, just in case. i got another $20 out of an atm in the store (plus the not-my-bank atm fees… so $23? $24?). i just about cried right there in the parking lot. now my chair, instead of costing $30, cost me $54. boo.

Ikea Poang Chair

i am hoping that my karma for the day has evened out. i scored an awesome deal on a chair via craigslist, which i’m going to go pick up tonight (good for me!).

about 30 minutes after i arranged that deal via e-mail, i got a call from school asking whether i purposely did not answer one of the three essay questions on an exam. um. nope. meant to answer all questions. i do not know how this is going to get resolved – we shall see.
